9.2 At the garden centre

Went to the garden centre near the Austin house, and right above the sweet little plaque with birds that says “welcome,” and the floral gardening gloves, in the place that you pay, they warn you that they’ll shoot you if you try to rip them off.

The nice lady who helped us told me she was going to spend her day off tomorrow with her grandkids, who are taller than she is now, but she’s still their grandmother and can “beat on them if they need it.”

When I used to spend time in DC, the hotel we stayed at was near the pentagon, and there were always these cheerful military guys raising their glasses of iced tea in a toast in the restaurant. I coined the term “affable menace” for “golly gee” type militarism. I see its provenance, here.
